错别字
网友很喜欢纠我的错别字，细抠各种“不够地道”的用词。十分谦虚地说：每一个错别字其实都是本砖精心设置的。因为有的人不相信我的微博是我自己写的，博文中适当地放些错别字有助于增加真实敢。奥地利作家Ernst Fischer说得好：Imperfection is the greatness of man 人类的伟大就在于不完美。
新移民·主流

据加拿大《环球邮包》最新民意测验80%的加拿大人称他们在日常生活中经常和新移民打交道，77%认为移民对加拿大很有帮助。上个月我参加了加拿大一家中文电视台举办的新移民杰出创业者颁奖晚会。致辞后一位获奖者对我说：“大山，不要把‘新移民’和‘主流社会’对比起来，其实我们新移民就是社会的主流。
得意而忘言

Culture Shock
Have you ever feel some culture shock when you are living in China? May I got some suggestions or instructions on culture shock between China and Canada when I am travelling in Canada?
大山：My definition of culture shock is when you get the feeling that everyone around you is just a complete idiot. If you step back for a moment, usually you’ll find the opposite is true. 鸟语

用“鸟语”形容听不懂的外国话并非中文独有。曾有位加拿大人听说我会说中文而发感慨：It’s amazing that you can understand all those chirps and beeps!（太神了，你能听懂那些唧唧嘟嘟！）我头一次听到用chirps和beeps来形容中文，感觉和称＂鸟语＂很类似（凭语气知道说者并无恶，但有点少见多怪）
Are the Chinese Cleaning our Clocks?
Interesting question with several dimensions.
1) Ultimately, what is more important to the human species: (a) socializing or (b) electronic gadgets? If you had to chose one, I would suggest that people who socialize non-stop are probably happier than those who spend every waking hour working in a Foxconn factory.

今天学了个新词，不得不再次感叹中文的内在逻辑真奇妙。天黑了，该休息了。请注意：这里还有两个口。别的就不用说了－－嘿咻。谁说中文词汇不好背，一准是还没弄懂其中的奥妙。

#山哥微英语# 在中国常常听到的一句英语病句是用How to开头：How to say～，How to spell～，How to do～。How to 可以做书名或标题，如How To Improve Your English，但口语中不要用How to开始一个句子。要说How do you…，或How should I …等。问：How can I improve my English? 答：多上微博练练！
China’s Power to Assimilate
I wouldn’t agree that the cultural influences absorbed by Han culture “then disappear into the Han melting pot”. This is a very common misconception.
The biggest example is always Buddhism, an entirely foreign culture that was introduced into China. It was absorbed, it was adapted, but did it disappear? Absolutely not. Buddhism had a profound impact on the fundamental nature of Chinese culture.Yes, China developed it’s own branch of “Buddhism with Han characteristics” but Buddhism also changed Chinese culture.

1922年的协和医院

祖父母遗留下来的历史资料：北京协和医院上世纪20年代的明信片。该院的前身“协和医学堂”于1906年由几个教会联合成立。1915年美国洛克菲勒基金会收购了医学堂的全部产业并投资巨款修建了现代化医院，于1921年竣工。我祖父母1922年曾在这里进行培训，这手工上色的明信片该是当年买的。
Pinyin or Wubi?
From Quora: What is your preferred method for writing Chinese on computers? Why?
Personally, I still use Pinyin — typing out the sound of Chinese characters according to the standardized romanization system.
For most non-native speakers, this makes the most sense because the first step in learning Chinese is to learn Pinyin, and at least speakers of Western European languages are entirely comfortable with the Latin or Roman alphabet. And typing is a skill that most people now learn at an early age.

随着“北京精神”（爱国、创新、包容、厚德）的正式推出，The Beijinger 杂志举行了征文活动，希望读者用六个英文单词组成一句话来概括总结对北京的印象。上个月该杂志登出了全部的投稿。这里有褒有贬，很搞笑，体现了驻京外国人对这座城市的复杂心理。

滥竽充数的“公益演讲”

昨天网友反映有个“名师英语大型公益演讲会”系列活动，票上印着我以及李阳、俞敏洪、严鲁丰和陈安之的形象。昨晚在农业大学烟台校区举行，好多学生以为我和其他几位都会去的。声明一下：我对这个系列活动一无所知，更没有授权使用我的形象。听说昨天实际上是严鲁丰的演讲。

据最新统计，2011年全球互联网用户中文网民占24%，英文网民占27%。2000年的统计是中文网民9%、英文网民39%。（这大概是按母语统计的－－本砖归哪边？用中文为主的英文用户？）尽管几年内中文用户所占的比例有可能超过英文用户，但目前纯英文内容的网站依然占全部网上资源的59%。

今天获悉：随着加拿大政府新一轮的预算消减，文化遗产部里的世博事物协调局被整体取消了。加拿大早在还没有正式建国之前就参加了1851年在伦敦举行的首届世博会，1967年又成功主办了规模空前的蒙特利尔世博会。没想到2010年上海世博会竟有可能是加拿大在世博大舞台上表演的最后一场戏….

加拿大漫画家皮尔·戴斯笔下的钟馗。关于题为《探望加拿大朋友》的作品（最后一张）皮尔曾向我解释：钟馗打鬼斩妖都一千多年了，也该有个出国休假的机会了。他画此图是为了展示钟馗不为人知的休闲时的一面。漫画家皮尔曾经在上海执教。

白酒·喷射机燃油

“白酒”不能叫Chinese wine。Wine是经酿制的低度酒，非葡萄原料的可点明是rice wine（米酒）或plum wine（梅酒）等，但酿制后经过蒸馏提炼的烈性酒叫spirit。 Liquor（含酒精饮料）包括wine和spirit。针对初来中国的人我更喜欢将白酒解释为Chinese jet fuel（喷射机燃油）一语点破白酒的力量。
